Skiing is for everyone!
With the help of volunteer guides, visually impaired and blind
skiers from Ski Hawks Ottawa enjoy the challenges and fun of
skiing.
Ski Hawks Ottawa offers an alpine ski program for skiers from 8 years to senior adults with a wide range of skiing abilities. The group of over 60 skiers and guides has been skiing at Camp Fortune for over 45 years.
The Program runs on Monday nights (7 p.m. – 9 p.m.) as well as Wednesday morning (9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.), from early January to mid-March.
Ski Hawks Ottawa is affiliated with both the Canadian Adaptive Snowsports (CADS) and the Canadian Adaptive Snowsports – National Capital Division (CADS – NCD). The Program also takes part in events sponsored by these organizations.
How the Program Works
Trained volunteers expertly guide visually impaired and blind skiers and snowboarders down the slopes, calling out the turns and warning of obstacles ahead. Some skiers and guides use a two-way radio headset to communicate with each other. This has recently been introduced to the Program thanks to the financial support from the Ottawa Community Foundation.
Safety First
Both skiers and guides are highly visible on the slopes. Skiers wear an orange bib and guides a yellow bib. Signs are also placed at the bottom of the lift area indicating that visually impaired skiers are on the hill.
