Canadian Adaptive Snowsports - National Capital Division

Volunteering

Volunteering with CADS – NCD

We need YOU to ski or board !

Volunteer skiers and boarders are needed to assist in the CADS – NCD ski programs

CADS – NCD is a volunteer-based organization committed to providing a safe, fun-filled environment and to the view that “Skiing is for Everyone!”

We require volunteers to be ski partners for skiers and boarders with a disability in several ski programs in the National Capital Region. Programs begin in early January and run through mid late March. Specific requirements vary by program — they are summarized below.

The success of our programs and skiers’ skill development depends on the generosity of all our volunteers. Without you, we are not able to offer the opportunity of adaptive skiing to more participants. We receive requests from more disabled participants every year!

With qualified volunteer instructors and adaptations to equipment, any person with a disability can access and enjoy alpine snowsports. The joy and excitement experienced by the participants and their families is evident every time they hit the slopes. The skier’s life changing experiences of learning to ski or snowboard is so powerful that the volunteer instructors who work with the students often remain engaged in the program for decades.

CADS – NCD programs are based at specific ski areas noted in the table below. Partnerships between the ski areas and the adaptive programs are strong and healthy. At many of the ski areas, the CADS – NCD programs are running at capacity and are constrained in size by the availability of equipment and the number of volunteer instructors. We are working hard to increase the number of volunteers to meet the needs of our ever-increasing number of skiers in these very popular programs.

Volunteer benefits include:

  • Free training – to be a ski partner and, as you build experience, to be an instructor
  • Free skiing – on program days
  • Free ski improvement sessions
  • Equipment deals
  • Smiles, fun, and more …

Requirements:

You are an intermediate or better skier or an advanced boarder and are willing to attend a majority of the program days. You enjoy assisting others and are rewarded by their successes.

Your involvement:

Consistency is important for many of our skiers and to provide the best possible programs. For this reason we ask that you try to make as many of the program days, for your chosen program, as you can. We realize that most of us will need to miss a day here or there – for business or personal reasons – in this case just advise the program co-ordinator as much in advance as is possible. In general the programs require, per day, about 4 hours of your time (program dependent, 3 hours per evening) as a ski partner You may use you lift ticket for your personal pleasure outside those hours.

To register or to obtain more information:

For further information or to register, please contact the Program Coordinator for your preferred program or Jeff Boucher bouch1957@gmail.com  613-884-3637 as soon as possible. Training starts in December.
