CADS-NCD Technical Committee

NCD’s Technical Committee is responsible for the scheduling and implementation of CADS Instructor certification courses. These include: Level 1, Level 2, Level 2a, and Level 3 certification designations. The courses are provided at no charge to existing CADS members. See TC Schedule for this season’s courses. Level 1
This is an entry level instructor certification course for volunteers who want to know more about teaching skiers with various disabilities. Topics covered include 3-Track, 4-Track, Visually Impaired, Skiing Aids, and Sit-Ski. There is an open book exam to assist participants in the review of the CADS Instructor “Skiing and Methodology” training manual. The course is normally taken over 2 days requiring 8 hours of disabled skiing methodology. Participants must have their Level 1 CSIA or CASI instructor certification or 6 hours of CSIA/CASI teaching methodology. They must have a current CADS membership.

Level 2
This certification course has been developed for Level 1 instructors who want to improve their teaching and technical skills regarding disabled skiing. Applicants will have the ability to communicate ideas and teaching criteria based upon their experience or knowledge gained from the CADS teaching manual. They will have 6 hours of review in this area be tested using this teaching ability with visually impaired, 3-Track, or 4-Track skiers. The certification course includes pass/fail ski-offs where the participants must demonstrate, 3 Track, 4 Track, Parallel Christie and Free Ski (on varied pitches skiing with controlled speed). Participants must have a current CADS membership, must be CADS Level 1 certified, have 1 season of disabled skiing teaching experience, be CSIA or CASI certified or have taken 18 hours of CSIA/CASI teaching methodology. Skiers with a disability must be able to teach and demonstrate in their own skiing function, but can use other participants to demonstrate other skiing functions.

Level 2A
This course has been designed for Level 2 CADS instructors who want to improve their teaching skills in the area of disabled sit-skiing. The course explores in-depth teaching on a mono-ski, bi-ski, quad-ski, and tethering. There is a teaching exam, a ski-off, and an open book exam that participants must pass. Attendees must have a current CADS membership, CADS Level 2 certification plus 1 season of teaching sit-skiing after attaining Level 2 certification.

Level 3 Rookie Examiner Certification
Current CADS members who have had their Level 2/2a certifications for a minimum of 3 years may apply to take the Level 3 Certification course. Their application must be accepted by a CADS Level 4 Senior Examiner who will attend the course and grade the Level 3 candidate as to pass or fail. The Level 3 candidate will be graded upon his/her knowledge and ability to run training clinics; ability to evaluate (i.e. pass or fail) Level 2 and 2A candidates regarding their instructor capabilities; and the ability to complete the required documentation associated with the course.
